INSTALLATIONS & CONTRACTS

Accuracy

All water meters have a typical accuracy curve based on optimal working conditions. However, very often water meters are installed incorrectly in the field, which affects the accuracy of the meter and therefore the revenue generated. All of our installations are carefully planned and professionally carried out to ensure the best possible accuracy from the water meter is obtained.

Accessibility & Maintenance Once a water meter or water meter set has been installed, a reading obviously must be obtained and the meter in future also needs to be maintained. Therefore, the location of the meter chamber as well as it’s construction are given due consideration to enable meter readers to collect the reading with relative ease and so that in the future the meter can easily be exchanged or serviced.

Connecting onto a Municipal Main Line (New Water Connections)

• The connection onto the municipal main line is done either by cutting into the main line and inserting a T-piece or via a “Live drilling” with a specialized clamp and cutting tool. If the main line is not on the same side of the road as the meter chamber, a road crossing must be done where the method will be dependent on the ground conditions and road width.

• If there are other utility cables (e.g. Telkom phone lines or Eskom Electrical Cables) in and around the area of the installation, Wayleaves must be obtained by Balamanzi which could extend the installation date.

• Balamanzi is the nominated and authorized contractor for the City of Cape Town for all Bulk Water Meter Installations and our installers are authorized to work on municipal mainlines.

• Prior to the installation, the client must obtain a contract/BP number from the City of Cape Town, received upon payment of the administration fee for a new water connection.

What size meter do I need?

The size and type of meter required by the client will depend on the size and type of the development. Different bulk meters also have different measuring ranges (i.e. minimum flows and maximum flows) and the selection is governed by pipe size, local regulations and environmental requirements. If you are uncertain as to which size is required please contact our office.

Who is responsible for what?
Currently, the common trend in municipalities in “Estate” type developments is to furnish the Estate governing body with a water bill for consumption reflected on the bulk water meter. The payment and internal apportionment of that bill is then the responsibility of the governing body. Therefore, it is in the best interest of all involved to have a proper installation that offers excellent accuracy.
